Ancient Sunrise® Henna for Hair Kits: Black
is different from other henna for hair kits!

This kit will dye chin-length hair a beautiful black.  If your hair is longer than chin length, you will need one kit for every three inches of hair length.

You can safely dye your hair a beautiful, true black with henna and indigo.
  • This is a two-step process: first you dye your hair with henna, and then you dye over that with indigo.
  • You can do it all on one day, or you can do the henna on one day and the indigo on the next day.
The results of this kit will vary according to the natural color of your hair.
  • If your hair is blonde, dark blonde, red, brunette, brunette, dark brunette, gray or white, this kit will dye your hair black.
  • If your hair is very light or dye resistant, or very damaged from chemicals, you may need more than one application to get true black.
  • Ancient Sunrise® Henna for Hair kit will dye gray and white hair black when used according to instructions.
  • Test first!
This dye is permanent.  It will not wash out.

Dyeing your hair black with henna and indigo is a two step process.  First you dye your hair with henna.  Then you dye your hair with indigo. Indigo over henna dyes your hair black.

Before you begin:

Test!
If you have never used an Ancient Sunrise® Henna for Hair Kit before, test first!
  • Harvest some of your hair from your hairbrush, use a little of your henna and indigo according to instructions.
  • Smear the hair thickly with the henna paste, make sure all the hair is completely coated, wrap it in plastic, and let it sit for several hours.
  • Rinse, and pat dry.
  • Smear the hair thickly with indigo paste, wrap it in plastic and let it sit for one hour.
  • Rinse, and pat dry.  See if it came out the way you want.
  • If it has a green tone, don't panic. That's from the indigo, it will oxidize to black in one day.
  • If you need help getting the results you want, ask questions on the forum at www.hennaforhair.com.  People there have had lots of experience with henna for hair, and they’ll be glad to help you!
Mix your henna the day before you dye your hair for best results.
  • This will help the henna stain your hair a darker color, and the color will not fade or wash out.
  • You will mix the indigo just before you're ready to use it, not the day before.
Instructions, Step One: Dye with Henna

Mix the henna powder in a glass, plastic or ceramic bowl with dilute lemon juice, orange juice, or some other mildly acidic liquid.

 cover and let it sit
  • Mix enough liquid into the henna to make a paste as thick as mashed potatoes.
  • Cover the henna paste with plastic wrap and let it rest overnight at room temperature.
  • When you are ready to apply the henna, stir in some more liquid until the paste is as thick as yogurt.
  • Don't mix henna with coffee.  Your hair will smell bad, and you'll get the jitters.  Coffee will NOT make your henna darker!
  • Don't add eggs or oil to henna.  That will hinder the stain.
  • Don't mix henna with wine or vinegar.  That will make the henna smell terrible.

Wear the gloves provided in the kit!
Henna will stain your hands!

This hair has previously been dyed black with synthetic dye.  Section the hair into 1/4" sections, and apply henna.  Apply paste thick, like cake frosting, one section at a time until all the hair is thickly coated. Wrap up the hair in plastic wrap and rest for 2 - 4 hours.

Section your hair into ¼ inch sections, and apply the paste right down to the scalp as if you are frosting a cake

Work the paste into the hair.
  • Coat every hair thickly by stroking the paste into the hair with your fingers.
  • Gradually work your way to your forehead, one section at a time.
  • Use the piping bag to apply paste to those “hard to get to” spots, or to do your roots!

When all your hair is thickly coated with the henna, clean the paste off your forehead, ears, and neck, and wrap up your hair in plastic wrap.  Leave the mix in your hair for two hours or more.  The longer you leave henna in your hair, the deeper the stain.  Then, rinse the paste out of your hair and shampoo.
Instructions, Step Two: Indigo over Henna

When you have washed the henna out and towel dried your hair, dye again with indigo.

mix indigo with water

mix indigo with water

Mix indigo with enough water to make a paste as thick as yogurt.  Stir out all the lumps.
  • Section your hair into ¼ inch sections, and get ready to dye your hair again.
  • Mix the indigo powder with water in a bowl.  Mix enough water into the indigo to make a paste is as thick as yogurt.
  • Use the indigo mix immediately!  Do not let the indigo paste sit for more than a few minutes!

Apply the indigo paste right down to the scalp, section after section, as if you are frosting a cake.

  • You must work the paste into the hair.
  • Coat every hair thickly by stroking the paste into the hair with your fingers.
  • Use the piping bag to apply paste to those “hard to get to” spots, or to do your roots!
  • Wear gloves! Indigo will stain your hands!
  • If you find the indigo paste is difficult to work with, add a little instant vanilla pudding mix powder.  That will improve the texture.
After  hair has been dyed red with henna, washed, shampooed and dried, section the hair and apply indigo paste.  Begin at the nape of the neck, and work forward, one section at a time.  When all the hair is thickly coated with indigo, wrap up hair in plastic, and leave it one hour.  When hair is dyed with indigo, rinse and shampoo the paste out of the hair.  In these pictures, you can see that henna and indigo dyed perfectly over hair with previous synthetic black dye.

When all your hair is thickly coated with the indigo, clean the paste off your forehead, ears, and neck
  • Wrap up your hair in plastic wrap.
  • Leave the mixture in your hair for one hour.   Wipe away any drips that trickle out.
  • After one hour, wash the mix out of your hair and shampoo.  In two days, the stain will mature to perfect black.
  • If your roots seem a bit reddish, go over them with more indigo paste.
If you have henna paste left over, put it in the piping bag and put it in the freezer.
  • Henna paste will stay fresh in the freezer for a year.  Thaw it, and its ready to use!
  • Use  leftover henna paste to touch up any spots you missed.
  • Use leftover henna paste  to go over your roots as they grow in.
  • DO NOT put leftover indigo paste in the freezer.  It will lose its power to stain.
  • When you want to touch up your roots, mix up some fresh indigo paste.

You can apply henna and indigo as often as you want.  Henna is GOOD for your hair!

Every time you apply henna and indigo, your hair will take up more color.
  • If your hair is as dark as you want,  just do roots whenever they begin to show.  Remember, gray hair grows faster than pigmented hair!  White roots show up fast!  Touch up your roots as often as you like.  Henna and indigo won't hurt you.
Some people love the smell of henna and indigo.  Some people hate the smell of henna and indigo.
  • If you hate the smell of henna, add a spoonful of powdered ginger and cardamom to your mix. Your hair will be pleasantly fragrant!

Ginger Root Powder (Zingiber officinale) 25g = $4.50

Cardamom Seed Powder (Elettaria cardamomum) 25g = $4.99

Some people think henna and indigo makes their hair feel dry.

  • Wash your hair a few times and condition once.  Your hair will settle down to feeling very silky.

Added notes:

  • People often need to change their shampoo and conditioner with henna and indigo: they can usually go without conditioner.
